Waiting. We all seem to be doing a lot of that this summer. We are waiting for the march of the virus to slow, waiting for downward trends, waiting until we can see loved ones and friends, waiting on that trip we had eagerly anticipated, waiting for news of how—or if—school will resume, waiting for a vaccine…
However, childhood illness has not waited.
We have pined for a cure, cancelled our plans, washed our hands, worn our masks and distanced from all. Yet babies have still been born too soon, cancer has still grown in small bodies and accidents have happened.
Families across our state need the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, and we will need your continued help. We were delighted to learn on July 9 that our period of waiting to accept new families at the House is coming to a close soon. After an enormous amount of work and planning, we will start slowly and safely by accepting 7 families into our apartments where they can be properly distanced.
Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on our ability to host our events as we normally would. Our Gala will now be held virtually on August 6, our golf tournament venue will need to change, A Tasteful Affair will not happen as normal this year, and that may just be the beginning.
Please consider supporting us in even small ways as we continue to care for families who truly need a hot dinner, a place to rest their heads so they show up with the best version of their weary selves, somewhere to do laundry and a space to receive comfort and kindness. We can all be responsible for positive impact, even in these troubled times.

The Sheltrown Family
Daniel and Jennifer Sheltrown are the parents to three boys: Asher, age 8, Gavin, age 6, and Bennett, age 1. Their journey to the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill (RMH) began when Jennifer was pregnant with Bennett.
The Sheltrown family knew that when Bennett was born, they would need to stay in the hospital, located an hour and a half away from their home. It was then that they were introduced to the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill by a friend who had also utilized the House. Jennifer said her first impression of the House was surprising. “It was very nice and way nicer than I would have ever thought. I also was blown away by how much there was and how nice EVERYONE was.”
“The House means there is a place that can help my family through some tough times and a place where there is just one less thing and one less stressor that I have to deal with, while dealing with a bad part of life. The Ronald McDonald House allows families to be close to their loved ones that are in the hospital.”
We’re going to the Grand Canyon – virtually, of course! It’s not too late to join in on the fun! You can back your favorite runners or you can still sign up and log any physical activity to track your progress on the course. Any activity counts – gardening, yoga, house and yard work, etc. – so if you aren’t a runner, don’t worry! Your intentional exercise minutes will be converted into miles to participate in the competition.
